  • to African Americans
  • and Cane River Creoles.
Born to an African mother and father, enslaved in the household of  Natchitoches, founder, Louis Juchereau de St. Denis, Marie Therese became the matriarch of the Creoles of Cane River, Louisiana and their French-African Culture. MAISON DE MARIE THERESE COINCOIN

MAISON DE MARIE THERESE COINCOIN

"...the little cabin on Marie Therese's first tract of land...should be a symbol of the humble origins which many Americans claim...and I hope that it will be preserved as Melrose (Plantation) is, because the contrast between those two homes will show vividly the progress and achievement that was made by the Cane River's noted 'Creoles of Couleur'."

    Cane River Historian,
    the late Gary Mills, 1978.

Plan a Romantic Weekend or Weekday Visit with Friends to Historic Natchitoches, Louisiana

The National Trust for Historic Preservation has announced that the Natchitoches Historic District is one of the Five Most Romantic Main Streets in the United States. Here is what they had to say about Front Street in Natchitoches. “What do Main Streets have that the malls don’t? Atmosphere… History… Romance. They’re the place to go for unique experiences. Candle-lit restaurants, unique wedding destinations, charming streets for strolls, intimate wine-tasting rooms, quaint B&B's, special historic spots — these are just a few of the things that make Main Street districts a romantic and friendly destination. This year, we scoured the nation to find the Most Romantic."
