MELROSE PLANTATION
Go inside the main house to see the floor of bricks made by enslaved
persons. Visit upstairs in the African House and view the original
murals by the internationally known Folk Artist, Clementine Hunter. See
the ca. 1778 Yucca House (at right), the first home of the Louis Metoyer
family, "gens de couleur libre" of Isle Brevelle. (1 1/2 hours. Entrance fee)
CANE RIVER CREOLE NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK OAKLAND PLANTATION
Tour the Main House and see the Shoo Fly, original glass window panes and the "bousillage" walls along with furnishings brought from France just after the Main House was completed in 1821. There are more than 20 outbuildings, original to the Plantation, including dovecots, fattening pens for the Thanksgiving turkey, the Overseers's House and two remaining slave cabins. (1 1/2 hours. No entrance fee. Individual or group donations accepted at site, but not required. Handicapped accessable. Pavillion with picnic tables and restrooms.)
FORT ST. JEAN BAPTISTE
Enter at the Visitors Center to see historical artifacts and watch a video to prepare you for your visit to the Fort. Walk the short wooded trail and visit the replica of Fort St. Jean Baptiste. See the first church to be built in this settlement. Enter the house of the store keeper. Talk with the guides in period dress. Watch the craftsmen.(1 hour. Small entrance fee. Seniors free. Handicapped access and transportation.)
STEEL MAGNOLIAS TOUR
Visit the filming sites of the movie "Steel Magnolias". See Shelby's (Julia Roberts) home, Truvy's (Dolly Parton) beauty shop and tour the church where the wedding scenes were filmed. Hear the family story that inspired the stage play as well as the movie. It delights and inspires. (1-2 hours. Donations accepted but not required at the church.)
